Genre

Genre means type. In this case type of film for examples

-comedy            -Documentary
-horror            -Rom Com
-action/adventure  -thriller
-sci-fi            -musical
-drama

Film from the same genre shares common elements. We can identify which genre the film belongs to from characters, events and mise en scene.

Thriller is a genre that don't share common character, common events or common mise en scene therefore it could be completely different on the surface.

 For example

These two films are both thriller but both of them are really different.

As we can see both of the films do not share any common in character, mise en scene or events However if we look at it in the big picture, thriller shares common structure.

The structure of thriller is Something under threat something posing threat and something stop the threat.

All the thrillers also evokes emotional response from the audiences. If you cannot imagine what is emotional response? It is like... well something like this   >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you end up doing that while watching movie that movie is probably a thriller.

As we can see from the example the thriller genre as a whole is extremely varied unlike other genre for example Western where every movie we can see people on horse back, cowboy hat and saloon bar. However thriller genre is divided into Sub-genres
within sub-genres there is high degree of similarity as we can see by character, mise en scene and events.

This is some example of sub-genres

These three movies are all spy thriller. These are some similarity between them

Characters: They are all spy or agent or whoever working    secretly.
Mise en Scene:Big city, Important building e.g.white house or where ever president goes.
Events:Someone going to bomb the world or going to kill the  president and these spies are usually the one who save the day.

There is a lot of sub-genre and this is a list of them

From all of the sub-genres I think crime thriller and psychological thriller are very interesting for making a title sequence.First of all because I personally like this kind of movie and second of all I think it going to be a lot of fun making it! Just talking about this I already have a lot of ideas!! I'm really looking forward to make my own thriller.

Prelim

In last lesson we were filming our prelim It is very exciting because it is my first time filming something. What we have to do is to film the fix dialogue but add our own story to it. My role is the director. What I did is giving others people signal for when to start and when to stop. Also look at the shot to make sure that it is good. What I learnt from doing this is the important of communication during filming. This is because the the actors can't see the whole picture and it is really important for the director
to look at the whole picture   and direct the actor and the camera to work together therefore communication between each sections is really important.

The day before we filming our prelim we planned our story first. Our story is about vandalism so we are quite prepared in terms of costume and props. On the day we have hoodies and colour spray to symbolise vandalism. However in term of practice we haven't try practice the dialogue before so it is quite hard on the day to get everything right. The location we got is in the editing room. In my opinion it doesn't really fit with the vandalism theme but on the other hand I think this vandalism theme can actually apply anywhere.

Here it comes the problems... Because it is too dangerous to do the real spray because there is a high chance that it is going to go on the wall and make a real mess so this scene that we were planning to do was cut off.

It is going quite slowly at the beginning as everyone wasn't really sure what to do but after 2 or 3 shots everything goes quite smoothly.

We learn from last lesson about continuity of the scene therefore when we filming the prelim we didn't forget to put the marks on the floor and watch the door until it close!
For me personally I think this prelim will look great after we edit it. However, what can we do next time is to practise the dialogue before filming it because it will help shorten    the time when we filming.

Filming prelim is a very fun experience.Everyone work very hard without everyone in this group this prelim probably not successful thank you everyone!!

Camera lesson 2

Camera lesson 2
In today lesson we learned a bit more about camera techniques and also doing our little sequence scene. This is what I have learned today......

Sequence
Sequence is a series of shots which put next to each other that gives an illusion of it happening in the same time.

Sequence need different size of shots Close up, Mid and Wide

This is how we do the sequence scene

1st Film the wide shot (Whole location)
2nd Film the mid shot
3rd Film the close up

We also have to be careful about the "continuous" of the scene. This includes little details like hair or button therefore we have to make sure that in each scene everything is in the same place to make the sequence flow smoothly.

180 degrees Rule

This rule tell us that we can shoot only 180 degrees along the line of vision. Why? This is because if we shoot on the other side of line of vision, the objects we shooting will look like it swop position or change direction and therefore it might give the wrong message to the audience or confused them. This is why 180 degrees rule is very important.

Rule of third

Rule of third is how to make the composition look nice and beautiful. Since putting object right in the middle is quite boring, try  put it on the point of intersection it will look much better.

Keywords
This is the keywords they use to communicate between each section when they filming.

"Standby"          - Everyone ready
"Turn it over"     - Start recording
"Rolling"          - Camera man say to make sure
                     camera is recording
"Action"           - Start acting
"Cut"              - Stop

Camera Lesson 1

  CAMERA LESSON 1

Hi, My name is Bee I’m from Thailand. I am a media studies student at Hurtwood House and this is my first ever blog.

Last Friday lesson is my first time using such a professional video camera. It’s the kind of camera that I don’t think I will have a chance to use in my whole student life so it was really exciting and interesting. Before this lesson I thought my IPhone and those little video camera is enough for me but this “Sony NX5 digital HD camera” really gives me more. Just carrying it in my hand I feel like I’m ready to film the next Oscar winning movie! :) In the lesson we learned many things from how to set up the tri-pod to adjust the white balance even though it is not everything about the camera this is some of what I learned from the lesson..

How to make your picture sharp

We have to make sure the picture is sharp so we can get a really nice scene. To do this we have to zoom into the object we want to shoot, zoom in where there is a lot of details e.g. hair  then adjust the focus until it looks nice and sharp and then zoom out.

Adjust white balance

Because different lights give out different colours therefore adjusting “white balance” is important because it gives the right temperature to the colour in the scene therefore people or objects that we are filming do not look as blue as Avatar or as red as Hell boy!

This is how we do it
  1. zoom into white object such as a piece of paper, shirt ect. until all screen full of white
  2. Adjust the focus
  3. Push the white balance button
